Mama: from Sketchbook to New Collection

A lot of blood, sweat & happy tears go into the creation of our collections. We thought we would share some of the sketchbook pages and behind the scenes magic that went into our latest limited edition Mama collection.

Mama is our very special collection we do for Mother's Day every year. We actually begin around August each year as there is quite a lot involved from the first concept to holding the final products in our hands.

This year's concept originally came from beautiful 70's inspired floral patterns. We wanted to put a contemporary spin on these by using the shapes as inspiration, but adding in a more painterly feel and zooming in a bit to create an almost abstract effect. We wanted to show the paint strokes and create some movement with a bit of a dreamy flowy feel.

It all begins with mood boards for reference & inspiration. From these we work up some rough sketches. We start to think about how the design will eventually sit on the different sizes and shapes of the boxes in the collection. We wanted a big white flower to sit on the top corner of the box as a feature and to create some contrast with the rest of the design. The flower would be a bit sharper or 'fluffier' than the rounded shapes of the rest of the flowers to create this point of difference. 

Also the flower centres would be much brighter and fairly stylised to also create some contrast. Behind these shapes would be some leaves with flowy lines as another subtle nod to the 70's and to bring it all together.

The first sketches are in colour pencil to get the ideas down in a quick and easy way. This is where the colour first starts to come into the design.

This is where the paints come out! It's time to really nail down the colour palette. Back to the mood boards for some inspiration! We were loving the blush tones contrasted with the whites, greens and pops of burgundy & rust.

It's time to put it all together. From pencil sketch to rough painting to final textured artwork. Then we digitise the painting and apply it to the boxes artwork to be printed. The boxes feature the word 'Mama' embossed with a beautiful gold foil to add an extra layer of glamour.

We are very happy with how beautiful the final result is. We hope to make many Mums happy this Mother's Day and beyond. The collection features our best-selling fragrance: White Lotus, Geranium Leaf & Bergamot.
